The car eventually stopped at, of all places, the observatory. Not that any visible light observing was going on from here. Too much light, too much activity.

Most astronomy was done in space. The observatory was part of the university, used for little projects by students.

It wasn't a Remainer place to go. Or was it?

Perhaps it was just the fact that in the middle of the day when it was raining, you could almost guarantee nobody would be here. Indeed, there was only one other car in the parking lot and it probably belonged to the day caretaker.

Privacy.

"What do you want?" Skyt asked, finally.

Their child turned to look at them. "I wanted to see you."

"I find that hard to believe."

"We're not going to have forever. Not any more. I wanted to see you."

It could even be true. It could be that Ktyl had seen the explosion and decided that life was too short to remain estranged.

Skyt turned that over in their mind. Life was too short, they were just too cynical to...

"I'm sorry," they said, finally. "I..."

"Everyone else wants something from you. Of course you think I do."

"I know you do. I just want that something not to be..." Skyt tailed off.

"I'm not a Remainer," Ktyl insisted.

"Good. I know it's only a tiny fringe group being crazy, but I'm glad you aren't part of that." Skyt meant it. They didn't want to deal with the idea that they had done such a poor job of raising Ktyl that they had turned into a terrorist.

"I'm a realist. We can't stay here, so we have to work out how to preserve as much of our culture as possible without...without it turning into some kind of religion."

Skyt chimed at that. "The offworlders already think it is one."

"Let them. We know better. They would be jealous if they knew."

Skyt thought of Graeme, who was jealous and not jealous at the same time. They didn't blame the human. They would feel the same way, to know others had some form of immortality, even if in a different form and state of consciousness.

Could they give it up? If it was going away, then yes, they might as well leave.

But they didn't want to. "But I understand the Remainers," Skyt said, finally. "I wish I didn't, but I do."

"Don't we all?"
